While we pray for missionaries working overseas and provide financial support for their needs, we are also concerned with reaching our local community.
John and Angela Wilmot
For over five years John and Angela Wilmot have worked in the small African nation of Malawi. Malawi is in the top ten of the world’s poorest nations. Over 60 percent of Malawi-s 12 million people, are termed ultra poor, living on less than 75 cents a day. HIV/AIDS has either infected or affected the whole population.
The Willmots: “It is in this environment that we find ourselves. We are constantly working amongst those living with HIV/AIDS directly impacting women, orphans and the elderly. The limitations of what we can do and how we can proclaim our faith in both Word and Deed has no limits. Running programmes aimed at poverty reduction in over 140 villages and gospel plantings in over 30 villages, impacts not only their physical development, but their spiritual development also. Together, through GiA, we are impacting some estimated 10 000 people.
Angela and John went to Malawi in 1999 with their two boys, Michael (b.31.5.97) and Shaun (b.3.11.98). In 2003, Grace (b. 30.5.01) and Blessing (b.4.11.01) became part of the family. Then, in 2005, Ruth (b. 29.5.03) and Brian (b. 5.11.03) came along. It is a happy though at times noisy household!
Life, word and action are all part of John's and Angela's ministry.
* John's and Angela's compassion and the witness of their home life are evident as they attempt to reflect Jesus' love for them and for others.
* To help people address issues of poverty, the GiA team have set up Total Life Care (TLC), offering basic agricultural training and help. 10,000 people have benefited from TLC, in which John has had a key role.
* John has set up evangelistic study groups in many villages, and has introduced several people to Christ. A focus for him now is discipling key people who are multiplying this Gospel-sharing ministry.
